Capturing the Unique Vibe of Detroit’s Trap Studio
The Trap Yoga & Massage Studio in Detroit is more than just a wellness space; it’s a unique cultural experience. As a regular attendee, I’ve personally connected with its special blend of calming wellness practices and vibrant urban energy. This personal connection inspired me to collaborate with Jamel, The Trap’s owner, to create a new series of photographs that visually articulate his brand’s compelling story.
Jamel has cultivated a strong brand identity that seamlessly merges health and wellness with a cool, music-infused urban aesthetic. My aim for this project was to expand upon his existing visual content, offering fresh perspectives and options to enhance his online presence and brand communication.
While The Trap already had a collection of brightly lit images effectively showcasing their yoga classes and signature Blac Thai Massage, I wanted to explore a different visual direction. We decided to delve into the atmospheric depths of the Blac Thai Massage, focusing on a relaxing, low-light approach to truly emphasize the profound sense of relaxation and tranquility it offers.
We also developed a striking black & white portrait series featuring The Trap’s talented instructors. This series was intentionally inspired by the visual language of classic black and white Nike advertisements and the iconic Vibe magazine cover featuring Death Row Records – a deliberate fusion of high-energy urban culture and timeless, impactful portraiture, reflecting The Trap’s own unique blend.
Project Highlights: Visualizing The Trap’s Story
Blac Thai Massage – Low Light Series: Emphasizing Deep Relaxation
To truly capture the essence of the Blac Thai Massage experience at The Trap, we opted for a low-light, atmospheric approach. Moving away from bright, conventional studio lighting, we utilized subtle and directional light to create a mood that mirrors the deep relaxation and tranquility of the massage itself.
These images are designed to transport viewers into the experience, allowing them to feel the calming atmosphere and envision the restorative benefits of The Trap’s signature Blac Thai Massage. The low-light aesthetic emphasizes intimacy, serenity, and a departure from the everyday hustle, aligning perfectly with the studio’s wellness focus.
Instructor Showcase – Black & White Series: Urban Edge & Timeless Style
As a thank you to the dedicated instructors who contribute so much to The Trap community, we created a series of powerful black and white portraits. Inspired by the iconic visual styles of classic Nike campaigns and the legendary Vibe magazine Death Row cover, this series aims to capture the instructors’ strength, dedication, and the unique urban energy of The Trap.
The stark contrast of black and white photography lends a timeless and impactful quality to these portraits. The visual references to Nike and Vibe are subtle nods to The Trap’s unique brand blend – fusing athletic dedication with urban cool. These portraits are designed to be both aspirational and authentic, showcasing the talented individuals who make The Trap such a special place.
